What thread should you use?
60 Bonded Nylon. Man made so it won't rot.
What sewing machine needles?
Ones with large eyes, e.g. SCHMETZ 110/18 (the guy in the sewing machine shop will know what this means.)
Keep them sharp so they slide through the fabric, you can hear when they get old as they rip through the material (they make a popping noise), weakening it.
Stitch?
Use a zig-zag or triple zig-zag for LEI's.
Method for ram air kite?

Use the way marks.
Make good use of all the way marks along a rib, make sure they are all lineing up well. 2 - 3 cm error at the TE is acceptable for over a meter of sewing.
Use the compass.
Mark on all bits of cloth, its position, top or bottom or rib, the direction of the center and tip of the kite. This will keep them orientated correctly.
Tip Line Attachment Points
Nylon webbing, buy in any sewing shop or seat belt material or bag straps. Extend up the Dacron tip to spread the load.
LEI Canopy Stitching
When sewing the canopy together align the two pieces correctly with the seam on the underside. Sew them together with a long, straight stitch. Sew the seam flat to the canopy with a triple zig-zag, or long zig-zag stitch.
